Danino Labs

Biologist Tal Danino programs and manipulates the natural patterns in bacteria to create prints that expose the beauty and complexity of microorganisms. Each bacteria has its own natural pattern preference specific to how they move and communicate. By using different types of dyes to stain colonies of bacteria growing in petri dishes at New York’s Synthetic Biological Systems Lab Tal and his team are able to observe and document a variety of shapes and structures.This artistic documentation aims to reveal the abstract universe of bacteria but it is something Tal does in his spare time. The main goal of growing and observing these unique patterns is to turn bacteria into tiny cancer fighters by learning how to harness their special properties. Tal knows that it’s constructive “to use the visual arts to help communicate science” and portion of the proceeds from this collaboration will be donated back to cancer research.
